Turn off Microsoft Office Protected View with Group Policy Editor to prevent Protected View error / crashes on users PC

If you’re users have been opening any office documents from email attachments, outlook attachments, gmail attachments, file shares, a different author, edited by someone else, another computer, downloaded from Onedrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, backup/synch service, then they are probably getting pretty annoyed at the following error/errors:

Microsoft Word (Protected View) has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution to the problem

And

Microsoft experienced an error trying to open the file. Try these suggestions. *check the file permissions for the document or drive. * make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space * open the file wih the text recovery converter. (C:\users\…\filename.docx) show help > > OK

If you’re a network admin with rights to edit Active Directory Group Policy the you may want to implement the following polices using gpedit.

  1. Open group policy editor (run gpedit)
  2. Download the ADM templates if you don’t already have them at: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=18968
  3. Add the templates to the group policy user configuration (right click admin templates and choose add/remove templates)


  4. Under Word Options > Security > Trust Center > Protected View 
    Disable – Open files on local intranet UNC in protected view 
    Enable – Do not open files in unsafe locations 
    Enable – Do not open files from internet zone 
    Enable – Turn off protected view for attachments opened from outlook


  5. Click OK
  6. Do this for all other office programs as well excel, PowerPoint, etc.


  7. Run a group policy update.
