New to Office 365 in May—updates to Skype for Business, Outlook, SharePoint and more – Office Blogs

There are some really exciting things coming out for , , , Azure, Office, Skype, you name it!  It’s mind blowing how fast some of these new things are coming out and its looking more and more like people will have to begin becoming even more focused within this space as the functionality continues to grow and develop.  At some point, it’s just going to be impossible to keep up with every single facet, actually it already is. make sure you take note that chat within a document is NOT saved like your other chats are.  This could be a good or a bad thing depending on how you look at things.  I can’t wait to try this out with someone today.  I will let you know how the experience goes in the comments when I finally get the opportunity to get someone to test it out with me.

One of the coolest implications of these features is on collaboration and knowledge management.  Now users can finally collaborate in real time on the same file without having to physically located in the same space, setting up a web conference (goto meeting, skype meeting,, webex, etc), or sending the file to the other user.  Not to mention that you are able to see the changes the other person is making in real time or let the person viewing make the changes with/for you!  Its mind blowing what we can do in a browser nowadays!   It was just a few years ago and it was impossible to think that you might be able to completely do away with your installed apps for an in browser experience.

Check out some of the latest features from the office blog, leave a comment and let me know what you think, and lets continue to create and grow as a community.  Who knows, in the future you might we might be collaborating like this while I am writing  a similar blog post or maybe when you leave a comment it will give the author the opportunity to join your session as you are writing the comment to turn commenting on blog posts into live chat sessions that are viewable later?  Feature request/development idea?  You betcha.  More things are flying out of the brain trust, who knows what they might give us in terms of functionality next.

Today, we’re pleased to extend this capability to our Office 365 Business and Education customers for documents stored in or . Built on the same technology as Skype for Business, the new chat feature is available in all the Office Online applications—Word, , and OneNote. When you share a document from OneDrive or SharePoint Online with your co-workers or classmates, they can view, make edits and even co-author with you in real-time. When multiple people are in the document at the same time, their names appear in the list of co-editors at the top right of the browser window.
